His well-received performance at the Bluebird Cafe when he was 16 encouraged him to start a band. He picked the guitar back up when he was 15. Dustin started playing the guitar at 8 or 9 but stopped. Putting his dream of going to medical school on the backburner, Lynch decided to pursue a music career. He chose the university because it was near the Bluebird Cafe where he would play and learn the craft of songwriting while he was in college.
